🌱 How It Started vs
How It’s Growing

Our Allotment Journey

When we were offered an allotment in April, we didn’t just see an empty patch of land. We saw possibility.

A place where parents could come together without appointments, without assessments and without needing to talk about trauma unless they wanted to. Somewhere they could simply be themselves.

The allotment when we first took it on in April The allotment beginning to grow in May The allotment flourishing in June

🪴 The Plot

Every Monday, our amazing Hayley leads The Plot, bringing together parents and volunteers to grow something far bigger than vegetables.

Week by week, beds have been built, seeds planted, weeds pulled, greenhouses filled and friendships formed. Parents return every Monday not because they have to, but because they genuinely want to.

The allotment has become somewhere to laugh, learn new skills, share ideas and enjoy each other’s company while working towards a shared goal.

🌿 Already this year we’ve harvested:

  • 🧅 Onions
  • 🌱 Radishes
  • 🫛 Peas
  • 🍠 Beetroot
  • 🧄 Garlic
  • 🌿 Herbs
  • 🥬 Kale
  • 🍓 Strawberries
  • 🌼 And many more

These fresh ingredients have been enjoyed by families at home and have also found their way into meals prepared here at New Beginnings.

💚 More Than Just Food

While New Beginnings exists to support families affected by trauma, we also believe that healing cannot happen if someone’s entire identity becomes centred around what has happened to them.

Parents deserve opportunities to reconnect with who they are beyond social care, beyond court proceedings, beyond difficult memories and beyond labels.

They deserve places where they can simply enjoy being outside, contribute to something meaningful, discover new interests and build genuine friendships with people who understand.

“This parent is so inspired by the work at the allotment that they have put their name down on a waiting list for a plot closer to their home.” It’s sparked a new desire, a new skill and a new identity.

🌱 Looking Ahead

Our hope is that this allotment continues to flourish for many years to come.

We also hope it represents something even bigger. As New Beginnings continues to grow, we want to bring back even more groups that aren’t centred solely around trauma, but around connection, purpose, creativity, wellbeing and belonging.

Because parents and the children and young people we work with are so much more than the hardest chapters of their lives. They are gardeners. Bakers. Artists. Volunteers. Friends. Learners. Families.

Most importantly, they are people worthy of joy, community and the chance to rediscover who they are beyond what they’ve survived.

From an empty plot in April to a thriving community space today… we’re growing far more than vegetables. 🦋

👢 Sometimes it looks like laughing over muddy boots.

🍓 Sometimes it looks like sharing strawberries you've grown together.

Why The Plot Matters

Because every family deserves opportunities to build confidence, discover new passions, contribute to their community and create memories that aren't defined by trauma.
